Artist statement:

“In ‘Floating smiles’, I juxtapose the grayscale figure with saturated balloons to create a sense of harmony and balance. The subject matter serves as a metaphor for the simplicity of human emotion and the colourful complexities of life.

The contrast between light and dark, joy and sorrow, recognises that amidst life's challenges, there is always room for celebration and for love to lift us higher."

Working with pencil directly on wood is a new practice I am experimenting with. I was surprised to see how easy my regular drawing technique worked with the wooden surface. Being able to utilise the natural grain of the wood as part of my composition, adds to the layers of meaning in the work.
